Oklahoma Admitted to the Union

Oklahoma was admitted as the 46th state, combining the Oklahoma Territory and Indian Territory into a single state. The territory had been opened to non-Native settlement through a series of land runs beginning in 1889.

Why It Matters

Oklahoma's statehood reflected the complex history of western expansion, Native American displacement, and the extension of democratic governance to new territories.
