Articles of Confederation Adopted by Congress
The Continental Congress adopted the Articles of Confederation, the first constitution of the United States. The Articles would not take effect until 1781 after ratification by all thirteen states, establishing a loose confederation with limited central authority.
Why It Matters
The Articles represented America's first attempt at self-governance and, through their weaknesses, provided crucial lessons that shaped the stronger Constitution of 1787.
