NASA Begins Operations
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration officially began operations, replacing the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. Congress created NASA through the National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958 in response to the Soviet Union's launch of Sputnik.
Why It Matters
NASA's creation demonstrated how Congress can mobilize national resources for scientific advancement and represented a new era of federal investment in technology and exploration.
