Stamp Act Congress Convenes
Delegates from nine of the thirteen colonies met in New York City for the Stamp Act Congress, the first significant joint colonial action against British taxation. The Congress produced the Declaration of Rights and Grievances.
Why It Matters
The Stamp Act Congress established the principle of "no taxation without representation" and demonstrated that the colonies could cooperate in defending their rights, foreshadowing the Continental Congress.
