Erie Canal Opens
The Erie Canal officially opened, connecting the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean via a 363-mile waterway across New York State. Governor DeWitt Clinton poured Lake Erie water into the Atlantic in a symbolic "Wedding of the Waters" ceremony.
Why It Matters
The Erie Canal demonstrated the transformative power of public infrastructure investment, spurring westward expansion, economic growth, and a wave of canal-building legislation across the states.
