North Dakota and South Dakota Admitted

President Benjamin Harrison signed proclamations admitting both North Dakota and South Dakota as the 39th and 40th states. Harrison shuffled the documents before signing so that no one would know which was admitted first.

Why It Matters

The simultaneous admission of two states demonstrated the principle of equal sovereignty among states and reflected the rapid westward expansion of American governance.
