Texas Declares Independence

Delegates at Washington-on-the-Brazos signed the Texas Declaration of Independence, declaring the Republic of Texas independent from Mexico. The declaration drew heavily on the language and ideals of the American Declaration of Independence.

Why It Matters

Texas independence and its subsequent annexation in 1845 expanded the United States significantly but also intensified the sectional conflict over slavery that would lead to the Civil War.
