Juneteenth: Emancipation Reaches Texas

Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that all enslaved people were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. This day, known as Juneteenth, became the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the end of slavery.
