Battle of Bunker Hill
Colonial forces fought British troops in the Battle of Bunker Hill (actually fought mostly on Breed's Hill) in Charlestown, Massachusetts. Though the British technically won the battle, they suffered heavy casualties, proving that the colonial militia could stand against professional soldiers.
Why It Matters
Bunker Hill demonstrated the determination and capability of ordinary citizens fighting for self-governance, bolstering colonial confidence and commitment to the cause of independence.
