Republican Party Founded
Anti-slavery activists gathered in Ripon, Wisconsin, and established the Republican Party in opposition to the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which threatened to expand slavery into new territories. The party rapidly grew and elected Abraham Lincoln as its first successful presidential candidate just six years later.
Why It Matters
The founding of the Republican Party demonstrated how citizen mobilization around a core principle could reshape the American political landscape and ultimately alter the course of the nation's history.
