League of Women Voters Founded
The League of Women Voters was founded in Chicago by Carrie Chapman Catt, just six months before the 19th Amendment granted women the right to vote. The organization was created to help the 20 million newly enfranchised women exercise their citizenship responsibilities.
Why It Matters
The League of Women Voters became one of America's most important nonpartisan civic organizations, promoting voter education, registration, and informed participation in democratic governance for over a century.
