Frederick Douglass Born
Frederick Douglass was born into slavery in Talbot County, Maryland. He escaped to freedom and became one of the most influential abolitionists and orators in American history, writing powerful autobiographies and advocating for the rights of African Americans and women.
Why It Matters
Douglass used his extraordinary intellect and eloquence to challenge the institution of slavery and argue that the Constitution, properly interpreted, supported freedom and equality for all people.
