Treaty of Ghent Signed
American and British negotiators signed the Treaty of Ghent in Belgium, ending the War of 1812. The treaty restored pre-war boundaries and resolved none of the issues that had caused the war, but it confirmed American sovereignty and ended the last major military conflict between the two nations.
Why It Matters
The Treaty of Ghent secured lasting peace with Britain, allowing the young republic to focus on westward expansion and internal development during the Era of Good Feelings.
