King George III Declares Colonies in Rebellion
King George III issued the Proclamation of Rebellion, declaring the American colonies to be in a state of open rebellion against the Crown. The proclamation rejected the colonists' petitions for reconciliation and ordered British officials to suppress the revolt.
Why It Matters
The King's proclamation closed the door on peaceful resolution and pushed many moderate colonists toward supporting independence, making the Declaration of Independence nearly inevitable.
