Battle of Bennington
American militia forces from Vermont and New Hampshire defeated a detachment of British General Burgoyne's army at the Battle of Bennington. The victory deprived the British of critical supplies and contributed to the decisive American victory at Saratoga two months later.
Why It Matters
The Battle of Bennington demonstrated the effectiveness of citizen militia in the Revolution and helped set the stage for the Saratoga campaign, which brought France into the war as an American ally.
